What is the definition of permanent eyeliner? Is it Really Forever?
Permanent makeup of any kind is technically classified as a tattoo. In other words, they involve a tiny needle implanting color into your skin. The short answer to whether it's truly permanent is no. Permanent eyeliner won't wash off with your other makeup at night, but it will fade away over the course of a year or two. If we're being picky, we'd argue that semi-permanent is a better term.
Your artist will clean the area with an eye-approved antibiotic and then use a numbing lotion to help lessen discomfort throughout the tattooed eyeliner application procedure. Then, using a special tool, micro-droplets of colored pigments are placed between your lashes and beneath the skin. This method may be repeated numerous times or spread out over several appointments to check color absorption.
Is Every Permanent Eyeliner the Same?
Certainly not. This is a completely individualized procedure. "Depending on the intended aesthetic or the experienced technician," adds Bossavy, "there are many various approaches, equipment, and digital suggestions." 'High definition,' a powdered or shadow-like finish, a thicker liner, or a tight line are all options."
The color of the tattoo eyeliner is tailored to your preferences, and your artist will collaborate with you to determine the form and look you want.
"For example, I want to raise a sagging corner, make the lashes look fuller, and make the eye brighter and more defined," adds Bossavy. "The form should be as conservative as possible so that it emphasizes your eyes naturally without makeup," says the expert. "However, traditional makeup can be added for a more dramatic or evening look."
How Long Does Eyeliner That Is Permanent Last?
Permanent cosmetics, such as tattooed eyeliner, has a one-year lifespan. It can last up to two to three years before you need to worry about touch-ups, depending on how well your eye keeps the color. (All the more incentive to employ a fantastic artist; more on that later.)
"The color will fade down and evenly over time until the molecules completely disperse and you can do it again," Bossavy explains. "It [could] fade to a mellow grayish tint once faded."
Like everything in the beauty world, permanent eyeliner requires some upkeep if you want to maintain the look. You’ll likely need to go for touch-ups at a rate of about once every year or so. Note that things like after-care (such as not getting your skin wet), general lifestyle factors, diet, skincare products, meds, and sun exposure all play a role in fading. Your tech can walk you through how to properly tend to your permanent eyeliner to help make it last.
